These buffered solutions help to maintain the morphological characteristics of the antibodies and their respective epitopes facilitating the specific binding necessary in an immunohistochemical reaction. The surfactant component is added to promote effective washing thus reducing background staining and to enhance reagent spreading across the tissue section in performing automated or manual staining protocols
