Non-sterile surgical drapes are disposable medical devices designed, after their sterilization, to cover the patient, surgical instruments and other operating room equipment. It serves as a barrier against the penetration of microorganisms into the surgical field. Surgical drapes can be a part of a set of medical devices within the meaning of Article 22 of EU Regulation 2017/745 (MDR), which must be subsequently sterilized with ethylene oxide. Non-sterile surgical drapes cannot be applied separately in operating theatres as a barrier against the penetration of microorganisms into the operating field, they must be sterilized before use!
